The flowers are not visible, as they are located inside the structure of the young fig. Edible figs are produced only from the domestic fig tree after the intervention of the pollinator Blastophaga psenes (the fig wasp), an insect that spends the larval stage of its life inside the figs of the wild fig tree during winter. Adult females exit the wild figs to deposit their eggs and in doing so, they enter the domestic figs, transferring pollen from the male flowers of the wild fig and fertilizing them. Pollination begins in late May and is completed in late June, while fruiting occurs in July and August. The fruits crowd together within their common casing, the fig, forming a syconium (infructescence). Each fruit contains a brown seed.

In Greece, several varieties of Ficus carica are found. They are classified into three main categories. The first category includes wild figs whose fruit is inedible yet essential for fertilizing the edible fruits of other varieties with almost no male flowers. For this reason, fig trees of this specific type are found wherever fig cultivations exist. The other two categories are the Smyrna figs and the gardening type figs. The latter ones are parthenocarpic and do not require pollination to reproduce, whereas the Smyrna figs are known for the exceptional taste of their fruits. Both of these varieties bear fruits twice a year.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”Noteworthy characteristics” tab_id=”1771591901860-5-01771656793597″ slug=”characteristics”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”174314″]

The petioles and unripe figs produce a white milky substance known as “fig milk” (latex), which is widely utilized in traditional medicine.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”Historical information” tab_id=”1669205767-1-841771656793597″ slug=”history”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”151656″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”128952″]

The fig tree is one of the earliest species cultivated by humans, known since prehistoric times and the only species of the genus Ficus native to Mediterranean countries. Fossils of leaves and fruits from the Pleistocene epoch of the Quaternary Period have been found in the Paris region, certifying the plant’s presence in Europe since prehistoric years. The species was first introduced to California by the Spanish in 1769.

According to Greek mythology, the Titan Sykeus was transformed into a fig tree by his mother, Earth (Gaia), to save him from the wrath of Zeus following the Titanomachy. The gods gifted the fig tree to the city of ancient Athens. According to Pseudo-Aristotle, figs, olives, and grapes were the favorite fruits of the Athenians and contributed fundamentally to human well-being. Figs were so sought after, even by the Persians, that their exportation from Athens was strictly forbidden. Consequently, the word “sycophant” emerged during that era; initially, it referred to someone who, for a hefty fee, informed on those secretly exporting figs. Later, as many made false accusations to collect money, the word acquired its modern meaning in Greek: “a slanderer or flatterer”.

Theophrastus provided detailed descriptions of the fig tree’s form and the insects developing within the figs, referring to the “horned worm”. Aristotle observed the cooperation between wild and cultivated figs for fruit ripening via insects. Pliny offered practical instructions on pruning, wind protection, and soil management, alongside medicinal recipes using leaves, shoots boiled in vinegar, and roots. Aristophanes also mentioned the use of fig juice in medical prescriptions.

Athenaeus mentions that the dried fruit from the Phrygian fig was considered a “heritage of our land” and describes the use of fig juice to curdle milk for cheese making. He also linked the fig tree to mushroom cultivation, noting that mushrooms grow when shoots are planted in manure and watered without removing the fungus from the root. Strabo and Pliny attested to the great economic value of figs and their presence in regions like Armenia and Iran.

According to Herodotus, Croesus did not campaign against the Persians because, as Sandanes advised him, they “did not even have figs to eat”. Conversely, Aelian claims Xerxes campaigned against the Greeks partly to acquire the coveted Attic figs. In the Iliad, Homer frequently uses the wild fig tree in battle scenes, while in the Odyssey, Laertes recognizes his son Odysseus only when reminded of the forty fig trees he had once gifted him.

The tree was also renowned for its prophetic powers. Apollodorus relates that the seer Calchas asked “how many figs a wild tree bears” as part of an oracle, while Pausanias notes that in Messenia, a fig tree signified the fall of the city to enemies. Pliny informs us that the appearance of strange fruits, such as figs on wild trees, was interpreted as an omen of coming events, a tradition persisting into Roman times, where a fig tree appearing in a sacred place during war foretold political or military shifts. In Rome, Ovid describes the Ficus Ruminalis, the fig tree under which the she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, establishing the tree as a symbol of salvation and divine protection.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”Uses” tab_id=”1669206843531-5-01771656793597″ slug=”uses”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”167955″]

Dioscorides, in his description of the wild fig, notes that the sap from its leaves is utilized for the treatment of earaches (otalgia). Furthermore, the root possesses extensive therapeutic applications: when applied as a poultice combined with barley meal (alphiton), it facilitates the reduction of chronic edemas, while its application with turpentine aids in the suppuration and opening of tumors (phymata). Additionally, a decoction of the root in vinegar provides relief from gout, and is also employed as a mouthwash for toothaches or as an infusion for sciatica. Finally, the juice or the bark of the root is considered a potent purgative, promoting the evacuation of phlegm and bile; it is deemed particularly effective for those suffering from dropsy (edema) without causing gastric distress, provided it is administered with wine over a period of three days. Figs are a versatile food source, consumed both raw and dried, and are frequently used to make jam. Beyond their culinary value, the fig tree has significant applications in traditional medicine. The milky latex produced by the tree is utilized for treating skin conditions, while the consumption of the figs themselves is used to treat stomach ailments and constipation.

(Note: Ethnobotanical data regarding the medicinal uses of plants must be handled with caution, and their application should be carried out exclusively under medical supervision).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”References” tab_id=”1771600746693-6-41771656793597″ slug=”references”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”116053″ el_class=”micro-text”]

https://floranorthamerica.org

https://www.worldfloraonline.org

Dioscorides, “De materia medica”, CLIV

Herodotus, “Histories”, Book I, Clio, 71

Homer, “Iliad”, Book VI, line 430

Homer, “Odyssey”, Book XXIV, lines 336–344

Ovidius, “Fasti”, 2.381

Pseudo-Aristotle, “On the Cosmos”, 401a

Christodoulakis, N.
