The trunk is upright, sturdy, and adorned with a characteristic rhomboid pattern from the scars of old leaves. The crown is formed by a dense canopy of 75 to 125 living leaves (maximum recorded: 443), which are pinnate, 4 to 6 m long, with 80 to 100 leaflets on each side of the central axis. The leaflets are linear, entire, with parallel venation, 30 to 45 cm long, and have a bright green color that remains unchanged throughout the year. The leaf arrangement is spiral, their texture is rough, and at their base, they bear very sharp spines, a distinctive feature of the species. Male plants do not form fruit clusters and often exhibit a denser leaf arrangement. Reproduction occurs exclusively by seeds, and propagation through offshoots, as seen in other palms, does not occur. Its flowers are white, small, and inconspicuous, without particular ornamental value, and appear mainly in spring (sometimes in winter) in large, branched inflorescences. Male flowers produce pollen, while female flowers, after pollination, form fruit clusters. The fruits are drupes, ovoid to spherical in shape, about 2 cm long and approximately 1 cm in diameter. Upon ripening, they turn yellow-orange to orange-red, resembling small dates. Their flesh is soft and edible but has little flavor and is not consumed regularly. Inside, they contain a single large, hard seed, which usually germinates in the spring or autumn of the following year. The fruits mature in early summer, are attractive to birds that aid in seed dispersal, and are valued more as an ornamental feature than as a food source.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”Noteworthy characteristics” tab_id=”1771591901860-5-01771656793597″ slug=”characteristics”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”126943″]

It is classified as an invasive species in southern coastal California.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”Historical information” tab_id=”1669205767-1-841771656793597″ slug=”history”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner column_width_percent=”100″ gutter_size=”3″ overlay_alpha=”50″ shift_x=”0″ shift_y=”0″ shift_y_down=”0″ z_index=”0″ medium_width=”0″ mobile_width=”0″ width=”1/1″ uncode_shortcode_id=”151656″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”126909″]

Its origin is not fully documented. During the Tertiary period (66 to 2.6 million years ago), numerous tropical plant species distributed across the Mediterranean region were forced to migrate southward due to gradual climatic cooling. The Canary Islands, however, remained phytogeographically isolated as North Africa progressively transformed into a desert. It is hypothesized that ancestors of the genus Phoenix participated in this migration, though it remains unclear whether this involved P. canariensis itself or a closely related ancestral species from which the modern Canary Island date palm subsequently evolved.

The mild and humid climate of the Canary Islands, combined with richer soils, likely favored its differentiation from more xerophytic species, such as Phoenix dactylifera or P. sylvestris. The palm was endemic exclusively to the Canary Islands until the 15th century. Spanish conquerors initially introduced the species to the Americas, while its use as an ornamental plant in Europe began during the 18th and 19th centuries; its widespread ornamental application, however, became prevalent in the 20th century.

The dense pinnate foliage of the Canary Island date palm not only provides shelter for local fauna but also functions as a thermal regulator, providing shade during the day and trapping heat at night. This favorable microclimate attracts numerous bird species (such as parrots), which select it as a primary habitat. Furthermore, the production of abundant drupes over an extended period (up to ten weeks) offers a consistent food source, particularly during the cooler months when other fruits are scarce. The species reproduces exclusively via seeds, with germination requiring 85–100 days and reproductive maturity being reached after the sixth year. It can live up to 300 years, maintaining a massive crown of over 200 pinnate fronds.

Nevertheless, this ecological adaptability has established P. canariensis as an invasive species in many regions worldwide. In Australia, Italy, Spain, South Africa, and the U.S.A. (California, Florida), the palm is now considered a naturalized species and often an uncontrolled factor in modern ecosystems, “escaping” from gardens and invading natural habitats. Despite being frequently characterized as a “nuisance plant” or even one of the “worst environmental weeds” in certain areas, its management remains challenging.

P. canariensis is one of the three indigenous palm species of Europe, alongside Chamaerops humilis and Phoenix theophrasti, while its natural palm groves have been recognized as priority habitats within the European Union’s Natura 2000 network (9370*).

In the town of La Orotava, Tenerife, stood the tallest Canary Island date palm, approximately 25–30 meters high, known as the “Conquest Palm” It is said to have been planted during the era of the Spanish conquest in 1496. Traditionally, its leaves were used for making baskets, ropes, roofs, and other handcrafted items, while the trunk was occasionally utilized as building material. In certain areas, the plant’s sap was collected and processed into sweet products in a process producing “palm honey – palm syrup,” with La Gomera being the only island in the Canaries where the syrup is produced. Although the palm is not a primary medicinal source, its presence in traditional agroecosystems highlights its importance as a species directly linked to human activity and the cultural heritage of the islands: natural palm habitats and the species itself are characteristic features of the landscape, contribute to shaping identity, tradition, and religious expression, and are reflected in local toponymy (e.g., Palma, Palmar referring to areas and landscapes abundant with palm trees). Mature plants are often used in ornamental gardens and can be transplanted fairly easily to a new location. Phoenix canariensis is widely cultivated in Greece as an ornamental plant. In recent years, a large number of specimens in the country have been destroyed by the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus).

(Note: Ethnobotanical data regarding the medicinal uses of plants must be handled with caution, and their application should be carried out exclusively under medical supervision).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_accordion_tab][vc_accordion_tab gutter_size=”0″ column_padding=”0″ title=”References” tab_id=”1771600746693-6-41771656793597″ slug=”references”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/1″][vc_column_text text_lead=”small” uncode_shortcode_id=”290560″ el_class=”micro-text”]

https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:668909-1

https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/13416997/122966725

André, E.
